Game of Thrones Tagging Conventions

gameofthronesdaily:

Hello!  We’re all excited about Season 7 and all the posts that have come from the first episode alone.

In that spirit, we thought we’d make a post clarifying some fandom tagging conventions.  The tracked tags are, of course, public tags and you can tag your posts how you ultimately deem fit.  But we encourage you to bear these suggestions in mind!

Remember: Tumblr has both a tracked tag system and a search system.  Most fandom blogs will not use the search system to find content for their blogs, relying instead on the tracked tag system.  Using your first five tags wisely will help your post get seen!

#gotedit

The #gotedit tag is a tag for content related to both Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire.  Many fandom blogs will track it and reblog from it, especially when looking for content from more recent episodes.  You’ll find all kinds of posts in there–moodboards, fancasting, preseries content, images and gifs from the most recent episode of Game of Thrones.

  • This this tag is not the same as the #gotcastedit.  For images or videos of the cast of Game of Thrones, we recommend using that tag since it is not specific to the content of the show or books.  Many fandom blogs track it in addition to the #gotedit tag, and there are many people who track the #gotedit tag who are not interested in seeing or reblogging cast material, so making sure you’re using your first five tags effectively will help your post get visibility.

#gotcastedit

The #gotcastedit tag is a tag related to the actors and actresses who appear in Game of Thrones, and any promotional material or magazine shoots they might be up to at any given time.  If an actor has ever appeared on Game of Thrones, even if they are no longer on the show, use this tag so that fandom blogs can find that content to reblog.

  • As with the #gotedit tag, we recommend that you don’t put content related to the plot of the show or books in this tag unless it’s an actor giving commentary on the scene.  The people tracking this tag are in it for the actors, not the plot!

#got[charactername]

Some people will skip these tags when tagging their posts, but they’re very useful for character specific blogs.  Many of the character specific fan blogs will not track  #gotedit or #gotcastedit since those tags can be very full of material following new content.  A blog dedicated to Daenerys Targaryen might only track #gotdaenerystargaryen, or people who love Daenerys content might track that tag specifically to get all the new posts about her.

#asoiafedit

While the #gotedit tag is friendly for content related to either Game of Thrones or A Song of Ice and Fire, the #asoiafedit tag became a tag specifically when Game of Thrones began deviating from the books so that people who didn’t watch the show but wanted book-related content could have a place to go for it.  It is also tracked by the blog @asoiafedit, whose mission is to reblog content related only to A Song of Ice and Fire.  If your post is not relevant to the plot or characters of A Song of Ice and Fire (since not all Game of Thrones posts are), please do not use this tag.

  • Not sure if your post fits book canon?  Most (though not all) things in Seasons 1-4 does.  Anything from the newest season likely doesn’t.

Individual Blog Tags

Especially when there’s a lot of new content, tagging individual blogs helps us find your post!  Tagging #gameofthronesdaily or any other fandom blogs will help the mods of that blog find your post!
