I believe that Petyr deep down is this optimistic force that believes he can achieve love and that’s why he is going to fail, because he is going to get fucked by what/who he loves, likely paying with his life. Inside, he’s still that hurt teenager, and he never grew past that.

In another narrative, a different, even more hardened and cynical Petyr could choose his ambition over his affection, but definitely at the cost of his heart.

Then he could truly be King of the Ashes.
